st. For very early forcing the bordershould be made so that the roots will be inside, and consequently not be liable to be chilledby cold rains or melted snow. The choice of trees partly depends on theposition which they are intended to occupy inthe structure. The best mode is to plant dwarfsin front, and train on wires from 12 to 15 inchesbelow the glass. In order that forced Peachesand Nectarines may be well flavoured theymust not be grown far from the glass. Sometrain dwarfs planted in front of the house ontrellises, curved so as not to intercept the sunsrays from the trees which are trained againstthe back wall. We have known trees whichwere trained on a trellis at a considerable dis-tance from the glass; but they did not yieldgood crops till their branches were raised andtrained near the glass; excellent crops werethen obtained. It is not the greatest quantityof shoots and foliage that can possibly be grownunder a certain extent of glass that should be THE PEACH AND NECTARINE. 181
