English: Cartwight Gardens, London, looking towards the junction with Burton Place. An impressive Georgian terrace currently undergoing restoration. It was built in 1810 and given the name Burton Gardens after the developer, but subsequently renamed in honour of Major John Cartwright (1740-1824), a political reformer who campaigned for universal suffrage, vote by the ballot, annual parliaments and the abolition of slavery. He lived here up to his death and there is a memorial to him in the gardens. The crescent also features in one of Trollope's novels and several other literary works.
The far side of the terrace is occupied almost entirely by hotels, one of which has provided a potted history of the location, see http://www.crescenthoteloflondon.com/the_history.asp?Reservations=true
