Summary

Description
English: Caerlaverock Castle This is one of only a few moated castles in Scotland and is also of unusual plan since it has three sides. Each corner defended by a tower. It dates from the late 13th century but its builder is unknown. It has been garrisoned by both English and Scots and in turn besieged and destroyed by each side. In the 15th century it was owned by the Maxwells, staunch Royalists and again suffered in the religious wars until largely demolished in 1640 following a 13 week siege by the army of the Estates.
