Summary

Description
English: Birmingham Assay Office. Birmingham was granted its Assay Office by Act of Parliament in 1773 following lobbying by Matthew Boulton and other Birmingham Silversmith. Prior this goods had to be sent to London or Chester, a process which took a considerable time in those days, and had a heavy risk of loss. The current Assay Office in Newhall Street dates from about 100 years later and is now one of the busiest in the country. Birmingham's Assay mark is 555704.
